Today the National Kidney Registry announced the activation of its 500th patient microsite. The microsite program provides free websites and hosting services for transplant patients seeking a living donor.
Dr. Sandip Kapur, the Surgical Director of Weil Cornell Kidney Transplant program conceived of the idea as a way for transplant centers to help patients who were waiting for a deceased donor transplant. “Patients can often wait many years for a deceased donor transplant. I am thrilled that so many patients have taken advantage of this opportunity to increase access to a living donor transplant.”
“The theory behind the microsite program is that if a patient can direct potential donors to a website that effectively tells their story, they will connect with more potential donors and increase their chances of achieving a living donor transplant. The theory is working, as many microsite patients are finding living donors and getting transplanted,” said Samantha Hil, the Microsite Project Manager and a living donor transplant recipient herself.
This important milestone coincides with the launch of the coaching program, a microsite enhancement that will help patients connect with someone who is an expert at running successful donor search campaigns. The coaches are often transplant recipients who have executed a donor search campaign for themselves and achieved a living donor transplant. Early statistics indicate that the microsite coaching program has the potential to triple the current microsite success rate.
